The Guns of Dara

Following the World Trade Center disaster on September 11, 2001, Bloomberg News sent me to Pakistan to cover the bombing campaign the U.S. was about to wage in Afghanistan. In Pakistan, I followed the influx of Taliban fighters into the Northwest Frontier Province where Osama Bin Laden was reportedly hiding. A colleague and I paid a bribe to enter the area after being warned that if we were kidnapped, the Pakistani police would not come to our rescue. In this report, part of an award-winning 3-part series, we visit the town of Dara, the center of Pakistan’s illegal gun manufacturing industry where workers sit it on the floor of sheds and copy, by hand, any gun they are given.
